PermaCOST is structured around five complementary Working Groups that address the key components required for coordinated and standardised permafrost monitoring across Europe. Together, these Working Groups form the operational backbone of the Action, translating its objectives into concrete activities and outputs.
The Working Groups cover the identification of key monitoring parameters and associated methods, the harmonisation of data acquisition standards, the evaluation and alignment of data processing practices, the assessment of permafrost state and evolution, and the promotion of operational permafrost monitoring networks at national, regional and European scales.
Each Working Group brings together experts from different disciplines, regions and career stages, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange. Through regular meetings, targeted discussions and joint activities, the Working Groups aim to build consensus on best practices and identify gaps and priorities in current permafrost monitoring approaches.
By initiating coordinated activities from the outset of the Action, the PermaCOST Working Groups provide a structured framework for collaboration, ensuring that expertise, methods and data practices are aligned to support robust and comparable assessments of permafrost response to climate change.
